Death as a Tool: What Shogun Teaches About Big Goal Achievement

How a TV Series Reframed My Thinking on Big Goal Achievement

Following the trail of Shogun.

The series left an indelible impression and once again made me reflect on the meaning behind the characters’ actions.

Since we’re dealing with a professional lens here, let’s look at what the characters do through the prism of Goals. Here’s the conclusion I arrived at — and I’m still sitting with it, even though I finished watching the series a month ago:

Death is a tool for achieving a Big Goal.

The Question Every Character Asks

How do I die well?

That’s the central question the characters grapple with. And from that question, they make their decisions — because they understand that death is the one thing they actually control.

There’s something else worth noting: the meaning behind what’s happening, or the master’s intent, may be completely opaque to the person carrying out the orders. But they don’t agonize over it — because they have faith in the master’s Big Goal.

Distinguishing Goals from Tools in Real Life

The ability to tell a goal apart from a tool, and to believe in a bigger goal — that’s something you have to learn. I’ve already helped several teams work through exactly this. And speaking from personal experience: new horizons open up.

Though this whole concept of managed death as a strategic instrument — that’s a different universe entirely.
