8 Stages of Management Art: How AI Agents Help You Level Up Faster
There is a concept called the 8 Stages of Management Art. Put simply, it is a model describing how the relationship between a leader and their team evolves over time. And recently, I have been thinking about how strikingly well it maps onto working with AI agents.
Understanding the 8 Stages of Management Art
At first, you constantly tell people what to do. Then you create rules and processes. Then teams start operating without constant supervision. Then you shift from managing tasks to shaping the worldview. Then instead of giving instructions, you start asking questions.
And then the most interesting part happens.
The team stops coming to you for instructions and starts coming with options. Your role gradually becomes one of choosing. But that is still a dream for most managers.
From Giving Orders to Managing Context: AI Agent Management in Practice
This framework maps onto AI agents in a fascinating way. Personally, I have been giving agents specific instructions less and less often.
I no longer set tasks like “go research this topic” or “come up with five ideas for me.” Instead, I gradually load my system with projects, meetings, notes, thoughts, ideas, goals, and all the context I consider important.
And then I start asking questions:
- What am I missing?
- Which projects reinforce each other?
- Where is there a hidden opportunity?
- Where is there a risk?
In essence, this is already the fourth or fifth stage of Tarasov’s model applied to AI agent management.
When AI Agents Start Coming to You With Ideas
But the most interesting thing happened recently.
I noticed that my idea generation engine inside the Agent Bar is gradually moving toward the sixth stage. It no longer waits for my next prompt. It explores my projects on its own. It finds intersections on its own. It seeks opportunities on its own. It comes to me with hypotheses on its own.
“What if we connect these two projects?”
“What if we use this technology right here?”
“What if there is a strong partnership here that nobody has noticed?”
AI Agent Management as a Career Accelerator
Will AI replace employees? Perhaps. Or perhaps it will allow one person to climb the stages of management art far faster than was ever possible before.
Build your agents. And keep moving up.
