Why Proven Distribution Channels Are the Only Thing That Makes Your Startup Real

What a Travel Startup Competition Taught Me About Distribution

I had the privilege of serving on the jury at a travel industry startup competition, held as part of MITT — a major international exhibition for the tourism and hospitality sector. Great startups, quality improving year over year, and the relevance of the solutions on display was beyond question.

Still, I want to share one small piece of advice for the competing teams — advice that could go a long way toward winning over investors and partners alike: don’t neglect distribution.

Why Your Startup Distribution Channels Define Whether You Exist at All

Ideas, technology, products, clever features, and polished UI — all of that is wonderful. But without a proven hypothesis that your distribution channel has been found, tested, tested again, and tested once more — and that it actually works — your startup does not exist. It simply does not exist in nature.

And whether it ever will is anyone’s guess.

How to Show Traction Across Any Distribution Channel

Here’s the thing: it doesn’t matter how modest your proof is — what matters is that you have it and you show it honestly.

If your only validation so far came from friends, family, and fools, say so. If you spent the equivalent of a hundred dollars on customer acquisition, great — show the results. If you walked up to a customer in person and put your product in their hands, show a photo of that happy person holding what you built.

Lead With Distribution, Then Tell the Rest of Your Story

Start with your distribution story. Lead with the channel. Prove that someone, somewhere, wanted what you made — and that you found a repeatable way to reach them.

Do that first. Everything else comes after.

And then — success will follow.
