Can AI Generate Truly New Ideas? Reflections on ChatGPT and Human Insight

Thinking Out Loud: A Few Weeks Deep into ChatGPT

I’ve been using ChatGPT heavily for several weeks now. The time savings are phenomenal. Personally, the biggest value for me is managing large volumes of information across all my projects — compiling data, summarizing meetings, tracking down additional context. But the question I was most interested in was different: can a neural network actually generate new ideas?

What AI Idea Generation Really Looks Like in Practice

At first, it seemed like the answer was unequivocally yes. But gradually I came to understand that what appears to be new ideas is actually the result of cross-referencing, processing, and presenting information I had already loaded into the system — repackaged and supplemented by the AI based on that very input.

The One Thing That’s Missing

What is clearly absent is insight — that moment of sudden clarity. Honestly, I’m not sure whether that line has been crossed or not.

Human Creativity vs AI: The Role of the Unconscious

Because insight is also emotion. It’s something you have to pull from deep within the unconscious and add a pinch of something inexplicable, something beyond reason. And without insight, there are no truly new ideas — including the ideas that AI itself needs to be fed in order to keep moving forward.
