Gradual AI Disempowerment: How Artificial Intelligence Erodes Human Control Over Key Systems
Scientists Warn of AI Disempowerment as a Growing Threat
A concerning debate is gaining momentum in the scientific community. A group of researchers from the prestigious Charles University in Prague and Telic Research has described the phenomenon of “gradual disempowerment” — a process by which even incremental improvements in AI capabilities can significantly undermine human influence over key systems: the economy, culture, and governance.
How AI Disempowerment Weakens Both Direct and Indirect Human Control
Of particular concern is the fact that AI systems, as they replace human labor and cognitive functions, weaken both direct control mechanisms — such as elections and consumer choices — and the subtler levers of influence embedded in social systems. “When these systems become less dependent on human input, people lose all means of influencing them,” the researchers warn.
