How to Run Strategic Sessions Using a Metrics Tree and Growth Drivers

Why Metrics Tree Goal Setting Changes How Teams Think About Strategy

I promised to share a recap of the masterclass I ran at the Facilitators’ Conference. The session was about how to facilitate strategic sessions using a metrics tree and a driver-based approach. My emphasis there was less on facilitation techniques and more on expert guidance for the team — because I often notice that teams walk into a goal-setting strategic session without truly understanding what their goals actually mean.

Building the Metrics Tree Before Setting Any Goals

So we start by breaking down revenue or profit into its component metrics, identifying the North Star metric, and mapping the growth drivers behind the key metrics. Only then do we move on to forming goals, key results, owners, a roadmap, and everything else that comes with it.

Even though a metrics tree might seem like a standard, templated exercise, every team has its own specifics. I keep collecting unusual trees and non-obvious drivers — and that collection keeps growing.

How to Apply This Metrics Tree Goal Setting Framework to Your Team

So here’s an offer: reach out to me directly if you want to walk through your own metrics tree, identify your growth drivers, and get a goal-setting template built around the drivers you find.

And drop a reaction here if you’d simply like to learn more about how this whole framework works.
