Goal Setting Mindset: Why Procrastination Contradicts Your Own Chemistry

We just finished watching the series Lessons in Chemistry. The final scene hit differently — it cuts straight to the heart of what goal setting is really about.

One line stayed with me:

“The only constant variable in a chemical reaction is change.”

What This Has to Do With Your Goal Setting Mindset

Here’s how I see this playing out in both business and personal life.

When we don’t set goals — when we don’t reach toward change — we’re contradicting ourselves. Not just psychologically. On a chemical level.

We are, at the most fundamental level, the product of chemical reactions. And chemical reactions, by definition, move. They transform. Stasis isn’t the baseline state of matter — change is.

How Procrastination Works Against Your Own Chemistry

Which brings us to the uncomfortable flip side.

You’ve done the work. You’ve set the goals. You know where you want to go. And then — nothing. Delay. Avoidance. The slow erosion of momentum that we politely call procrastination.

That’s not just a productivity problem. That’s resistance to a natural chemical process. You’ve identified the reaction. You’ve assembled the elements. And then you’re actively preventing them from combining.

The Anti-Procrastination Mindset Starts With Accepting Change as the Default

I’ll admit — I was never a fan of chemistry in school. Looks like I’ll have to catch up now, for the sake of what actually matters.

Because once you accept that change isn’t something that happens to you but is the very mechanism you’re made of, the goal setting mindset shifts. Procrastination stops feeling like a neutral choice. It starts feeling like what it is: fighting your own nature.

Set the goal. Start the reaction. Let the chemistry do its work.
